Areas of responsibility

Gary leads on strategic planning within Creative Scotland and oversees our work in relation to Equalities, Diversity and Inclusion; Knowledge & Research; and Place, Partnerships and Communities. He has a lead role in developing external partnerships and works with Scottish Government, Local Authorities, development agencies, and other partners to help maximise Creative Scotland’s impact in our role as a funder, development agency, and advocate for the arts, screen and creative industries.

Background and experience

Prior to taking on this role, Gary was Head of Place, Partnerships and Communities within Creative Scotland and led on partnerships with local authorities and other regional bodies to support the development of the arts, screen and creative industries across Scotland. Gary has also held the position of Cultural Policy & Partnerships Officer at Aberdeen City Council, a role in which he managed the authority’s Creative Funding Programme and led key multi-partner initiatives including the establishment of Aberdeen Festivals and the development of the city’s cultural strategy.

Gary holds undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, as well as a Certificate in Cultural Planning from the University of British Columbia. He recently concluded a postgraduate research degree which built upon his previous research into local government cultural policy in Scotland and Scandinavia.
