Industry Event Puts Scotland’s Emerging Comics Creators and Graphic Novelists in the Frame

Emerging comics creators and graphic novelists are invited to take part in Scotland’s second annual In the Frame: Emerging Comics Creators Industry Event on Monday 24 April, 10:00-16:30.

Designed to demystify routes to funding, publication and distribution, the free online gathering is produced by Literature Officer Alice Tarbuck, Creative Scotland. The original idea was developed in partnership with industry specialists Hannah Berry, Nyla Ahmad, and Woodrow Phoenix and supported by the Society of Authors, with backing from The National Lottery.

In The Frame delegates will be able to:

• Join influential graphic novelist and illustrator Posy Simmonds who’ll be discussing her varied and colourful career in comics, and her routes to publication. This session will be chaired by Hannah Berry, award-winning graphic novelist, comics creator, writer, illustrator and campaigner
• Get a better understanding about the business side of writing and best practice for freelancers in what promises to be an illuminating session with the Society of Authors - the UK trade union for writers and illustrators
• Find out more about Crowdfunding – what works, easy mistakes to avoid, which platforms are suited to which projects – from industry specialists Paved with Gold
• Get the lowdown on the best Comics events and festivals with Julie Tait, Director of the Lakes International Comics Festival and Chloe Green, Festival Director, Thought Bubble Festival
• Increase knowledge of funding opportunities for creative development through Creative Scotland, in conversation between Illustrator and comics artist Maria Stoian and the arts agency’s Head of Literature, Alan Bett.

In the Frame is Creative Scotland’s second free online event, designed specifically for emergent comics creators based in Scotland. The event aims to support independent creators to build their knowledge of the sector and the skills and networks needed to connect their creative work with industry professionals and readerships.
