Progress update on Screen Unit - May 2018

Published: 04 May 2018

Today, as a mark of further progress with Scotland’s new Screen Unit, Creative Scotland launches the refreshed Production Growth Fund with an increased budget of £2million, supported by the Scottish Government and the National Lottery.

The Production Growth Fund aims to help grow Scotland’s screen production sector, creating employment opportunities for Scottish crews, encouraging the use of production facilities, providing significant opportunities for the professional development of Scottish based producers, and delivering a direct and significant economic benefit to Scotland.

It seeks to do this by attracting large scale productions and maximising spend in Scotland and further building on the record levels of Film and TV production that Scotland has been experiencing in recent years.

Since its launch in 2015, the Production Growth Fund has been extremely beneficial in attracting international productions to Scotland.- Iain Munro, Deputy Chief Executive

This week also marks the first full meeting of the Screen Committee who will be responsible for the governance of the Screen Unit. The Committee membership includes senior representatives from Scotland’s screen industry: Gillian Berrie, Sigma Films; John McCormick, Independent Producer; and David Strachan, Tern TV; as well as Creative Scotland Board members and representatives from Scottish Government, Scottish Enterprise, Skills Development Scotland, Scottish Funding Council and Highlands & Islands Enterprise.

Following the last update on the Screen Unit, the Scottish Government has launched recruitment for new Creative Scotland Board members with specific Screen experience to enhance existing Board expertise. Recruitment is also well underway for five new posts who will join our dedicated Screen Team, including an Executive Director who will lead the Screen Unit.

The Screen Unit is a partnership between Creative Scotland, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Skills Development Scotland, Scottish Enterprise and the Scottish Funding Council. The Scottish Government is providing an additional £10m to support Scotland’s Screen sector, bringing the total funding for screen to £20m in 2018/19

Iain Munro, Deputy Chief Executive at Creative Scotland said:

“We are very pleased that through the support of the Scottish Government and the National Lottery, we are able to announce this increase in Production Growth Funding.

“Since its launch in 2015, the Production Growth Fund has been extremely beneficial in attracting international productions to Scotland including Outlaw King, T2 Trainspotting, Ordeal by Innocence, Churchill, The Wife, The Loch.”

“We are incredibly grateful to the industry representatives who have joined the Screen Committee to help steer the Screen Unit Project through its first year, providing invaluable support to the Creative Scotland Board and partners.”
