Welcome to the September 2021 version of the Research Round Up. This edition features the findings from the DCMS Covid-19 Events Research Programme and further Covid-19 impact research. 

There is also the Selling Platforms Report for Visual Arts, Craft and Design in Scotland, commissioned by Creative Scotland and a report that explores digital inclusion in the arts and cultural sectors.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has released its report on the Event Research Programme (ERP) – a series of pilot events which took place in England.

This report describes the Arts Council’s ongoing response to the impact of Covid-19 on the arts. It contains new research on the pandemic’s impacts on cultural organisations, artists and audiences. It reflects on the cessation of artistic activity, and the extensive resulting damage to the lives and livelihoods of so many artists and arts communities.  

 
 

Place matters: Greater Manchester, culture and ‘levelling up’ 
Centre for Cultural Value, July 2021

This article examines how values-led partnerships between local government and the cultural sector in Greater Manchester have allowed for a place-based response to the impacts of the pandemic, and what this means for the 'levelling up' agenda. 

 
 

Creativity in Crisis: Rebooting Australia’s Arts and Entertainment Sector After COVID 
The Australia Institute, July 2021 

New research from the Centre for Future Work, by Senior Economist Alison Pennington and Monash University’s Ben Eltham, reveals the ongoing, devastating impact of COVID-19 on Australia’s arts and entertainment sector and provides a series of recommendations to government that would reboot the creative sector after the crisis.

Selling Platforms for Art, Craft and Design in Scotland: A Report 
Pace Projects for Creative Scotland, July 2021 

The Selling Platforms Report for Visual Arts, Craft and Design in Scotland was commissioned by Creative Scotland in 2019 and gives an important insight into the experience of people working in the sector in a variety of roles, from the maker to the seller. The report reflects a pre-pandemic world but showed growth in the numbers of open studios and commercial galleries selling work, increased sales and customers for the sector - both locally and nationally – and more opportunities for selling internationally and online.

A report on digital inclusion and exclusion in the arts and cultural sector. The report provides key findings and recommendations relating to promoting digital inclusion at an audience / participant, organisational, sector and community level.

This report by the Creative Industries Federation and Creative England explores the power and potential of the UK’s creative industries to regenerate places, rebuild the economy, drive innovation, and create jobs in the UK, as well as offering policy recommendations.

This report that summarises research by Coventry University into the range and contribution of creative freelancers in the UK, based on the economic, cultural and social value they generate.

The ScreenSkills Assessment 2021 gives a snapshot of skills issues affecting the UK screen industries during the period from January 2020 to January 2021 - a time of significant disruption caused by Covid-19. 
 


High-end television in the UK 2020 workforce research

One of the key objectives of this report was to identify the key skills and grade shortages and associated issues from the HETV industry.

This annual report provides a list of the programmes produced by the PSBs outside of the M25, and criteria against which each programme qualifies as Made Outside London.
