The Cabinet Secretary for Constitution, External Affairs and Culture is seeking to appoint four new Chairs, one to each of the boards of National Galleries of Scotland, National Library of Scotland, Historic Environment Scotland and Creative Scotland. The Cabinet Secretary values highly the benefits of having different points of view on boards and welcomes applications from people from all walks of life.
National Galleries of Scotland is a vibrant organisation, employing around 350 staff at its three Edinburgh sites. Our mission is to care for, develop, research and display the national collection of Scottish and international art. This includes a lively and innovative programme of activities, exhibitions, education and publications, which aim to engage, inform and inspire the broadest possible public.
National Library of Scotland is the largest library in Scotland, one of the pre-eminent research libraries in Europe and the major centre for the study of Scottish literature and culture. In recent years we have developed a reputation for highly innovative approaches to widening access to our collections and expanding engagement with the many diverse communities in Scotland. This remains the core theme of the Library’s most recent strategy, Reaching People: Library Strategy 2020-2025.
Historic Environment Scotland play a lead role in securing the delivery of the Strategy for Scotland’s Historic Environment – “Our Past Our Future”. We are responsible for protecting and promoting some of the nation’s fabulous heritage assets, like Edinburgh Castle. We also look after some of Scotland’s outstanding collections and archives. But at Historic Environment Scotland, we do so much more – as a regulator, as a grant provider, as a research organisation and as an expert heritage adviser across a wide range of subjects.
Creative Scotland supports culture and creativity in Scotland. We support a Scotland where creative activity is vibrant, valued and experienced by everyone inclusively. We are here to enable creative people, communities, places and activity to thrive. We distribute funding from the Scottish Government and the UK National Lottery with an annual budget in the region of £100m and a staff team of around 130 people.
