Open Fund

The Open Fund is one of Creative Scotland’s key funding programmes, supporting the wide range of activity initiated by organisations, artists, writers, producers and other creative practitioners in Scotland. The total budget for the Open Fund in the financial year 2021/22 is £13 million.

We have two strands – one for individuals and one for organisations, so the two are not in competition with each other for funds. These strands have separate budgets and applications are considered at separate panels.

Individuals

If you’re an individual artist, writer, producer or other creative practitioner based in Scotland, you can apply to the Open Fund for Individuals through our new, online application form.

To learn more about how this strand’s application process has changed, read the news story.

You can also book onto an online Sector Session to find out more about the redeveloped application process for this fund.

Organisations

If you’re an Organisation, you can continue to apply to the Open Fund: Sustaining Creative Development.

Open Fund: Sustaining Creative Development

Decision-making in the context of Covid-19

Updated: August 2021

Both The Open Fund for Individuals and The Open Fund: Sustaining Creative Development guidelines outline risk as a key factor in our decision making. One of the key risks to creative activity is currently COVID-19 and our approach is informed by the Scottish Government guidance on this issue, which is regularly evolving.

Whilst Creative Scotland wishes to continue to support creative and experimental practice in the arts, Creative Scotland cannot accept avoidable or unmanaged risk to health and safety and our funding approach will be cautious in this regard. Applications which include public performances and/or activity in health or care settings should ensure that relevant Scottish Government guidance is being followed, and appropriate risk plans are in place.

International travel

Applications to both strands of the Open Fund can include international travel as long as Scottish Government advice is being followed (including any guidance on, or emanating from the particular international locations you are planning to work in/ travel to) and appropriate risk management plans are in place.

As regulations are changing frequently, please check the Scottish Government website at the time of submitting an application and be aware this guidance may have altered by the time your application is considered at panel. The panel will have to take decisions based on the Scottish Government guidance current on that day.

Creative Scotland cannot be liable for any further costs incurred beyond those agreed in the grant award including any costs incurred as a result of further COVD impact and/ or change in Scottish or other government regulations before or during the term of the project. If the project becomes unviable as a result of changes to government guidance Creative Scotland reserves the right to recoup, all or an element of, the funding.

For the avoidance of doubt, government guidance takes precedence over any statement by Creative Scotland.
