Collaboration at the heart of Scotland's creative industries

The Creative Industries team at Creative Scotland is focused on supporting the growth of more sustainable creative businesses. As part of this, we supported Creative Edinburgh and Creative Dundee and other partners and businesses during 2016/17 to produce a series of events exploring opportunities to discuss business models, collective working and collaborative approaches between creative industries and other sectors. Here further details on just three of those events.

Access to Finance – More Than Money

Creative Scotland, Social Investment Scotland and Creative Edinburgh joined forces in February to run a one-day Access to Finance Forum: ‘More than Money’ which included micro talks, panel discussions, case-studies and networking.

The event was designed as a forum to build knowledge and understanding of alternative financing and financial models for Scotland’s creative and cultural organisations, creating space for debate, critical thinking and helping to build confidence. This forum supported the growth and strengthening of Scotland’s creative community.

The day was made up of talks and engaging practical sessions, considering the future of funding and exploring alternative routes. The partners created an accessible space to have honest exchanges about funding, investment, peer to peer models and crowdfunding.

The live stream on the Creative Edinburgh Facebook page had over 4,936 views and 8,783 people reached.

Mass Assembly

Mass Assembly was a one day forum set in the context of the Dundee Design Festival exploring the future of collective working for creative communities and the places they are based.

In May, Mass Assembly brought together those who are part of creative hubs, collectives, networks and clusters from a range of international locations, rural and urban. The forum aimed to build stronger connections across Scotland and beyond, during the inaugural four-day festival, which took place at West Ward Works.

The day included dedicated time for cross network introductions and skills exchange, discussions around the important role of networks to our creative places, exploring the impacts they make, and featured presentations from leading international experts about the future of the collaborative economy. It provided a unique setting for key influencers to hear about the value and impact of hubs, with an insider’s guide to their activities, business models, and the ways they support the growth of the creative and wider economies.

Creating Care

Creating Care was a one-day forum, workshop and platform exploring the opportunities of collaboration between healthcare and the creative industries. It took place in January 2017 in Dundee. Produced in partnership between Creative Dundee, Creative Scotland and NHS Tayside, the day featured exemplar case studies and practical sessions to establish high level engagement in both sectors. The visionary themes of Catherine Calderwood’s Realistic Medicine was used to frame this first high level engagement event held between healthcare and the creative industries.

The day aimed to:

  • Establish effective health and creative industries interaction at a strategic level
  • Turn Realistic Medicine into practice - with Tayside leading the ‘how’
  • By the end of the event to have a clear sense of the structured approach and the best mechanisms to support the next steps

The day included contributions from both the healthcare and creative sectors, as well as a workshop led by Open Change, focused on generating a shared language and actions that will help establish high-level policy to enable the more effective implementation of design-led creative solutions. The event has led to at least two further collaborations between designers and healthcare professionals and stimulated moves for a more strategic relationship between the creative industries and health.
