Great Feats talk about their Cashback for Creativity work

Great Feats at Dance Base

In our Connecting series, artists, venues and creative projects talk about their work, their audiences and their plans for the future.

Creative Scotland’s Cashback for creativity programme supports Great Feats which is run in Edinburgh by Dance Base.

Inspiration

We are committed to involving the participants to get the best out of themselves and the others around them.- Great Feats

Young people not in education, training or employment are referred onto this programme for many different reasons. Taking these young people out of exclusionary environments gives them the confidence and ability to grow as young adults. The Dance Base Outreach Team is committed to involving the participants to get the best out of themselves and the others around them. This is done through dance, nutrition education, participation and attendance at performances.

Where is it happening?

The venue is Dance Base in the Grassmarket, Edinburgh. We also offer participants trips to theatre and performances in different locations. The programme runs two days a week at Dance Base during school terms.

Our partners

Great Feats is supported by Cashback for Creativity and Young Start, a grants programme that distributes money from dormant bank accounts. It aims to create opportunities for children and young people aged between 8 and 24 to help them realise their potential.

Our partnership with Edinburgh Community Food has been invaluable and means that these young people are taught about how to care for themselves through better nutrition and exercise. We have had the pleasure of seeing our participants go on to full-time employment, education and training.
Our youth worker, Lotte Walters, has headed up this project for us, along with Community Dance Artist Allan Irvine.

Who is it for?

This programme is for young excluded people not in education, training or employment and usually with difficult family environments and upbringing. Young people are referred onto this programme through schools and supporting youth agencies. However, we do a recruitment drive whenever there is room on the programme and our youth worker assesses suitability for the programme.

Great Feats aims to provide its participants with:
  -  Improved levels of fitness
  -  Improved physical and mental health
  -  Increased confidence and self-esteem

Participants will develop creative skills, learn choreographic tools, extend their repertoire of movement and have fun!

Cashback for Creativity

CashBack for Creativity is part of the Scottish Government’s CashBack for Communities programme, which reinvests the proceeds of crime back into communities to benefit Scotland’s young people.
