Dance from Scotland at Tanzmesse nrw 2016: Let’s Dance by YDance

International Tanzmesse nrw is Europe’s largest dance trade event, taking place 31 August to 3 September in Düsseldorf, Germany. This year marks the first time Scotland has presented a co-ordinated presence at the festival, with programme performances from Joan Cleville Dance and Mystery Skin, as well as a Scottish delegation of attendees including choreographers, performers and producers. Over the next week as we look forward to Tanzmesse nrw and to strengthening our international connections, we will present a series of features on some outstanding collaborative projects and exchanges between Scottish artists and international partners...

Young dancers from Let's Dance

Let’s Dance is an EU funded European community dance project is taking place throughout 2016/17 that aims to strengthen the employability skills of young artists, inspire new creative work and engage new dance audiences across Europe.

The project is for young people aged 15 and over from Germany, Netherlands, Scotland and Spain and will provide an opportunity for those interested in community dance to take part in local and exchange workshops. Participants will have the opportunity to travel Europe to create a new dance piece based around the theme of ‘migration’ and its impact on European citizens and culture, combining the methodology of Tanztheatre and Community Dance. Let’s Dance sets out to provide a socially inclusive programme that will create high quality accessible dance-theatre performances for everyone.

YDance (Scottish Youth Dance) is delivering a 10-month programme of workshops in Glasgow working with 15 young dancers of all abilities.  Five young participants travelled to Leeuwarden (Netherlands) and Bremen (Germany) in July 2016 to work with their peers from the partner organisations for the first time. The international group will convene again in Glasgow in October, to continue working to create a forty minute dance with their choreographers, then travel to Granada (Spain) to finish the piece which will be performed there in February 2017.

Carolyn Lappin, YDance Executive Director said: “We are delighted that YDance is a partner in Let’s Dance, our first Creative Europe collaboration, which will give young dancers of all abilities the chance to learn new skills, and create work with their peers from across Europe. Let’s Dance offers a fantastic experience for participants, and opens up European horizons for young people in Scotland.”
