International Tanzmesse nrw is Europe’s largest dance trade event, taking place 31 August to 3 September in Düsseldorf, Germany. This year marks the first time Scotland has presented a co-ordinated presence at the festival, with programme performances from Joan Cleville Dance and Mystery Skin, as well as a Scottish delegation of attendees including choreographers, performers and producers. Over the next week as we look forward to Tanzmesse nrw and to strengthening our international connections, we will present a series of features on some outstanding collaborative projects and exchanges between Scottish artists and international partners...

Chalk About by Curious Seed

Chalk About is Curious Seed’s internationally acclaimed production, created for young audiences aged 8+ and is a playful, funny and sometimes moving look at how we see ourselves and others, featuring dance, chalk, chat and one perfect scene containing everything you could wish for. The piece explores the nature of identity and asks some big questions; ‘What makes us who we are?’,  ‘Is it where we are from?’, ‘Or how we talk?’,  ‘Is it the way we dance?’,  ‘Our pasts, our futures?’,  ‘And, most importantly, doesn’t everyone like pizza?’.

Chalk About has received a host of positive reviews and responses, with a five-star review in The Times calling it: “Some of the most brilliantly imaginative, humorous, touching theatre I have seen this year.”

Created by Christine Devaney and Leandro Kees (Performing Group, DE), Chalk About originated through the Fresh Tracks Europe programme in 2011.  The piece was commissioned by Imaginate, supported through the Scottish Government’s Edinburgh Festivals Expo Fund, produced by Catalyst Dance Management (Dance Base), co-produced in association with Tanzhaus NRW, (Dusseldorf, Germany) and supported by Lyra Theatre (Edinburgh) and The Work Room (Glasgow).

Since 2013 Chalk About has been presented internationally in Australia, Austria, New Zealand, Denmark, Belgium, Malta, Norway, Netherlands and Macau, and remains available for touring.

Christine Devaney, Artistic Director, Curious Seed said:  “Being involved in such an inspiring and forward-thinking project like Fresh Tracks Europe - which truly came from a collective desire to nurture talent and invest in the development of dance for young audiences – led to the creation of Chalk About.  This piece of work wouldn’t have been conceived without the opportunity to be part of these creative encounters with practitioners from all across Europe, who really care about the future of dance!  The legacy of this is evident in the acclaim which Chalk About has received, and the work’s ongoing international success.  It’s also been great that we’ve grown and nurtured the relationships forged through the FTE project, and that these connections continue to support the work that Curious Seed produces.”
