Do you support self-publishing?

No, the Open Project Fund for Individuals cannot support authors or other creators for projects or activity that includes plans to:self-publish trade books promote self-published trade books via events, touring or other provision such as school workshops undertake development of trade books ultimately intended for self-publication. Publishers are considered to be organisations, and as such are not eligible to make an application to the Open Fund for Individuals. My book has been published by an established trade house and therefore is not self-published, but I have been asked to contribute to reprint/indexing/other costs for a new edition. May I apply?

It is not good practice for a publishing house to seek financial contribution from its author(s) and we cannot support you with such costs through any of our funding programmes, including the Open Fund for Individuals. We are not able to support applications for you to re-acquiring your backlist from your publisher. Read more

Can I apply to the Open Fund for Individuals for support to write a book?

Can I apply to the Open Fund for Individuals for support for any kind of creative writing?

Yes, so long as your plans also meet the other criteria for this fund outlined in the Guidance for Applicants. The writers we have previously supported to develop through the Open Fund include those experimenting with poetry, graphic creative non-fiction and graphic fiction, hybrid works of prose and poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction: for adults and for children. We are also able to support applications from other types of writers, including Spoken Word Artists and Performance Poets looking to develop themselves and create new work not intended for the page.
