Applications invited for Animation Base Camp

Animation Base Camp - presented by Once Were Farmers and The Animation Centrifuge in association with Creative Scotland and Sony Pictures Animation.

Emerging animators can now apply to take part in an innovative new programme designed to develop skills and support the transition from study to employment.

The 8-week workshop programme - from Monday 11 July to Friday 2 September - will be hosted and supervised by award-winning, Glasgow-based Production Company and Animation Studio, Once Were Farmers.  The programme also includes weekly critiques with mentors from Sony Pictures Animation producers of worldwide hits such as Hotel Transylvania, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, hybrid live action/animated blockbusters The Smurfs and the upcoming fully animated reboot Get Smurfy in March 2017.

The Base Camp presents a unique opportunity for animators in Scotland to develop their creative, technical and production management skills in a collaborative studio environment, and to be mentored by some of the world’s leading professionals in this field. The Base Camp is one of a number of valuable initiatives taking place across Scotland to develop a skilled and diverse screen workforce, and underlines our ambition to support and strengthen Scotland’s animation industry.”

Animation Base CampWorking in teams within an Industry-based framework, participants (from Scotland, Ireland & Norway) will be provided with industry mentors and given specific roles in animated feature pre-production for the 8-week period. The outcome of the workshop will be the production of high quality animatic sequences, accompanied by corresponding character and environment artwork. By reflecting the structure of the industry, the workshop will help participants develop creative, technical and production management skills. 

The production will be based on a unique concept created for the Base Camp by Director David Feiss, animation director on The Ren & Stimpy Show during its first season and creator of the ground-breaking Cow and Chicken animation series.

Applications are open for roles in either the Story and Editorial or Production Design department. Positions include: Production Coordinator, Story Artists, Editing Assistant, Production Design, Production Coordinator, Environment and Prop Designers, Visual Development – Painters and Character Designers.

The Animation Base Camp has been supported by the National Lottery through Creative Scotland’s Targeted Screen Fund.

Notes to editors

A training bursary, equivalent to the UK minimum wage, will be provided to the selected participants for the 8-weeks and affordable accommodation will also be available.
