Radio Magnetic is a Glasgow based internet radio station that began broadcasting in March 2001. It’s now recognised as the UK’s longest running independent internet radio station and is firmly established as one of the top 5 internet broadcasters in the country. Initially focusing on underground dance music, it has since expanded its scope to include everything from indie, to jazz, hip-hop and dubstep.

With a programme roster made up of specialist shows, guest features, DJ mixes and both club and live sessions, they aim to provide their listeners with an alternative to the sometimes repetitive playlists of commercial radio. Their current roster of shows includes programmes presented by the likes of Mogwai, Jim Gellatly and Glasgow club night Optimo.

Radio Magnetic were the first station to play music by well known Scottish acts such as Mylo, FOUND and Hudson Mohawke and their Live Circuit sessions have featured artists such as Roots Manuva, The Bays and King Creosote broadcasting from the like of T in the Park, Benicassim and Homegame.

On Demand and Mixcloud Migration

Since 2006, the station has strived to move with the times and reflect the changes in online listening habits. Originally broadcasting online 24/7, the focus of the station has gradually shifted towards radio on demand and this year, as they celebrate their 10th birthday, they made the announcement that all of the stations content is to be migrated to Mixcloud’s dynamic cloudcast platform. As well as this, the development of Mixcloud’s new iPhone App means the station’s content will also be accessible via 3G and WIFI - providing listeners with greater access to the station and its content. Other Projects

The station, together with their parent company Inner Ear, have also been involved in various collaborative projects. One of which was last year’s Creative Scotland sponsored Music Business Innovation event. Curated in conjunction with the SMIA and Interactive Scotland, the event brought together a cross section of the music industry to discuss and debate the future of the music business from an industry perspective. Here's some footage from the industry Q & A.

Radio Magnetic also worked closely with Creative Scotland to produce a series of Tune-up Podcasts to support our Tune-up tours programme. Creative Scotland’s Tune-up tours took artists from a range of different styles to peripheral towns around the country – towns that wouldn’t normally play host to big name acts on the traditional Scottish touring circuit. The Podcasts featured the likes of Edwyn Collins, Frightened Rabbit, Treacherous Orchestra, Ryan Quigley Big Band with Justin Currie, Breabach, James Yorkston, Nuala Kennedy & Tommy Smith.

Radio Magnetic is run by three passionate music and media enthusiasts in Dougal Perman, Andy McColgan and Bobby Perman, with a network of dedicated freelance and voluntary colleagues. Up-to-date Radio Magnetic news, features and programmes – including some more 10th birthday specials - can be found on their website and their mixcloud page.
