Get Dancing for International Dance Day…
If you want to experience breathtaking dancers in innovative new choreography, a number of dance performances from leading companies are taking place across Scotland over the next few weeks. Or if you're interested in going dancing then the network of Dance Centres in Scotland provide opportunities for all ages, abilities and taste. The summer term is now under way at Dance Base in Edinburgh, Citymoves in Aberdeen and Dance House in Glasgow.
Bodysurf Scotland based in Findhorn is celebrating International Dance Day with a special staging of The Planetary Dance, devised by Anna Halprin. Bringing together people of all ages and abilities in a beautiful setting, The Planetary Dance is participatory dance rather than a theatrical performance. Open to all, this is the final event in Bodysurfs 4x4 Dance Body and the Environment workshop programme which has been supported by Creative Scotland.
Established by UNESCO and the International Dance Council, International Dance Day aims to encourage the public to celebrate dance in all its forms.
On Tour in May
Claire Cunningham is touring her award winning solo show, ME: Mobile/ Evolution. Claire’s distinctive movement style incorporates her use of crutches to create visually stunning choreography.

Claire was recently awarded one of the major commissions for Unlimited, the ground-breaking programme that celebrates arts and culture by disabled and deaf artists on an unprecedented scale for the Cultural Olympiad and has received investment from Creative Scotland towards the creation and touring of ME: Mobile/ Evolution.

Scottish Ballet is currently on the road with its imaginative new production, Alice. Choreographed by Artistic Director Ashley Page, the ballet follows the extraordinary adventure of Alice inspired by Lewis Carroll’s curious tales. It includes stunning design by Antony McDonald and a specially commissioned musical score by Robert Moran.

Scottish Dance Theatre is Scotland’s leading contemporary dance company. Lead by director Janet Smith, the company is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2011. As part of these celebrations, the company is leaving the studio and heading out into the Dundee community performing mini interactive performances in some local community centres giving people the opportunity to meet the company.

Scottish Dance Theatre receives foundation investment from Creative Scotland.

Scottish dance companies are also in demand internationally and on the 7 May, David Hughes Dance will be opening the Festival of Scottish Theatre in Dresden with The Red Room. This radically reworked interpretation of Edgar Allan Poe’s classic tale The Masque of the Red Death has already toured extensively across Scotland.
