Screen Unit Project

The SNP’s Scottish Parliamentary election 2016 Manifesto and Programme for Government made a commitment:

“The priority for Scotland’s screen and creative industries sector is to deliver growth in production activity, generating more and higher quality job opportunities and enhancing sustainable economic impact.”

“To enhance its support for the screen sector, a dedicated screen unit will be set up within Creative Scotland in the next year. It will combine expertise from our creative and enterprise partners and oversee support, increasing inward investment and helping development, production and distribution.”

This commitment was made in response to strong views from the screen sector in Scotland that a more coherent inter-agency approach to public support for screen should be developed.  Please refer to the Screen Sector Leadership Group report from January 2017.

The ambition is that the Screen Unit will combine expertise from creative, skills and enterprise partners, increase inward investment and clearly led public-sector support from development to production to distribution, prioritising input and advice from the sector. It will be led by Creative Scotland.

Who’s involved?

Creative Scotland is working with partner agencies including Scottish Enterprise, Skills Development Scotland, Scottish Funding Council, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Scottish Government and individuals and groups working in the screen sector.

Next Steps

A project team has been convened to develop an agreed proposal for how the Screen Unit ambition might best be delivered. Detailed work is taking place between August and October.

In late autumn, Creative Scotland will present to the Cabinet Secretary for Tourism, Culture and External Affairs, a collaborative blueprint for a Screen Unit.
