This summer thousands of people across the UK, from professional to amateur dancers, young and old were involved in Big Dance 2012, the UK’s biggest celebration of dance as part of the push to Get Scotland Dancing.

This specially commissioned film, followed the Big Dance events in Scotland's cities and captured the experiences of some of the participants. You can watch the trailer below and stream the full film on our Vimeo channel.

Get Scotland Dancing aims to encourage more people to get active and participate in dance. In support of this Scottish Government policy, Creative Scotland will invest £1.5 million across a four year period, creating an inclusive celebration of dance across Scotland, linking into the wider UK and marking Scotland’s place in the world.

Working with Scotland’s key dance organisations, the initiative will bring together professional and amateur dancers of all ages to dance in public spaces in our towns, villages and cities – bringing dance to the people and people to dance. We want to strengthen opportunities to participate in dance and create a lasting legacy for communities throughout Scotland.

“Dance has the power to transform people’s lives. It’s fun, creative, expressive, entertaining and a great physical activity. It's a great way to meet new people and learn new skills. Get Scotland Dancing will see communities coming together and dancing in the streets, gardens, museums and shopping centres.

“Get Scotland Dancing allows us to build on the success of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to raise the profile of dance as a creative, participative and physical art form as we move towards Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Scotland's has a thriving dance scene with an incredible range of talented choreographers, dancers and dance companies to inspire and teach us all”

Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs, said:

“From ceilidhs and Highland reels to ballet and break-dancing, dance is part of Scotland’s rich cultural identity. As part of our ambition to Get Scotland Dancing, the Big Dance initiative and the Year of Creative Scotland 2012 are great platforms to get Scots of all ages and abilities involved in dance activity, as well as promoting Scottish culture and creativity on the world stage.”
