26/07/2010 - The Briggait – New hub for the arts launches in Glasgow
Formerly a 100-year old fish market based in Glasgow’s Merchant City, The Briggait is now enjoying a new lease of life as a thriving cultural hub. The two-year, £6.5 million project was launched at the weekend as part of the Merchant City Festival. The launch included artists' open studios, dance, aerial performances and a family circus workshop.
The Creative Scotland co-invested development will be home to over 80 visual artists and cultural organisations. The space includes 45 studios, five shop units, offices, a public café, and a gallery mezzanine overlooking a stunning nineteenth century courtyard (soon to be open to the public). It is also the new home of established theatre companies such as Dance House, Mischief La Bas, and Theatre Nemo.
It is proposed that the next phase of the Briggait development be the creation of Scotland’s first National Centre for Dance, Circus, Physical Theatre and Live Arts. This would include a state-of-the-art space for aerial and flying trapeze – a first for Scotland. Costs are estimated at approximately £3.7m.
