About the Programme
This three year programme (2011/12 – 2013/14) aims to develop the cultural economy by building the long-term organisational resilience and financial sustainability of the cultural and creative sector in Scotland.
The Cultural Economy Programme enables organisations to address identified areas of need:
- Access to specialist business and financial expertise.
- Business skills development.
- Access to a range of finance and working capital.
- Development of support networks.
- Underwriting of risk around collaborative working and innovative partnerships.
- Access to digital development and capacity building.
Across 2011/12 and 2013/14 a total of £7.5m has been allocated to support this.
The following open funds are available under the Programme:
1. Sustainable Development
Funding is available to enable organisations to improve their long-term resilience, financial, or environmental sustainability. Organisations can apply for support to develop their business practices, and/or collaborations that improve organisational effectiveness; improve financial sustainability by exploring and eveloping new financial models and/or income streams; or develop green initiatives that reduce organisations’ environmental impact.

Funding Available
In 2013/14 the total budget available for Sustainable Development is £1.5m. Individual awards range from £15,000 - £100,000.

There is no deadline for this fund. Applications are accepted at any time and you will be notified of the decision within 12 weeks of the application submission date.
2. Digital Developements
We have developed partnerships with NESTA, AmbITion Scotland and SYNC in order to create an integrated programme of support for digital development in Scotland’s cultural sector.
This programme will address the needs of organisations at varying stages of development and is designed to:
- Support capacity building around skills, infrastructure and knowledge in adopting digital technologies;
- Address and reflect the further digital development needs of organisations;
- Support the further organisational sustainability of those exploring progressive business models or at a more advanced stage of creating content.
Digital Development Routes:
NESTA: R&D Fund The Digital Research and Development Fund for Arts and Culture, is a partnership between NESTA Creative Scotland and the Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) to support arts and cultural organisations across Scotland who want to work with digital technologies in order to expand their audience reach and engagement and/or explore new business models. Arts and cultural organisations in Scotland can apply for up to £100,000

| AmbITion Scotland
AmbITion Scotland are delivering a range of small development investments and a series of events focused on sharing digital skills, knowledge and resources throughout the cultural sector.

Sync runs the annual Culture Hack Scotland event, a Geeks-in-Residence programme and publishes the SyncTank magazine - all of which promote prototyping and more progressive relationships with digital and design talent as means for catalysing innovation in the cultural sector.
