Who can apply for a Scottish Arts Council Creative Scotland Award?
Only established artists who can demonstrate a major record of achievement in their artistic work should apply.  Only individual artists can apply: it is possible to involve other artists in the project, but the application must come from a single individual. Applicants must have lived in Scotland for the past year and plan to remain here for at least another two years.

Who cannot apply?
Previous recipients of a Scottish Arts Council Creative Scotland Award cannot apply.  Only one award per applicant can be made.   Applications cannot be made by architects, designers or film-makers, unless they can demonstrate that the main benefit of their project will be to an artform supported by the Scottish Arts Council.   An applicant cannot apply for funding for a project which has already started.

What type of project has been successful?
The diversity of projects is stunning.  A showcase of completed projects, as well as details of those projects yet to be finalised, can be found on this site.  You can search by artform, by name of artist or by the year in which the Award was made.

How much funding is available?
Originally, sums of £25,000 were awarded to 14 artists annually, but in recent years we have offered awards of £30,000 each to up to 10 artists. Awards are not given for courses, or for projects which have already started.

How can I apply?
We are currently reviewing the scope and opportunities offered by the Creative Scotland Awards in their present format, in order to build on their existing success and to widen the range of potential applicants, as well as developing stronger links with successful applicants. The review of the Awards is expected to conclude in Autumn 2008 and further information will be available then, both on this website and through the Scottish Arts Council's IB e-zine.

Who are the assessors and judges?
Generally, these are artists who have previously received Creative Scotland Awards and who represent a wide range of knowledge and experience.  They are supported by other independent experts in their specialist fields and, in the initial shortlisting stage, by Scottish Arts Council artform officers.  The final Panel of judges is independently chaired: It makes independent choices, and its decisions are final.  Read more about the Panels.

These Awards are lottery funded: how does that affect the project?
The Scottish Arts Council is the distributor of National Lottery funds for the arts in Scotland.  The main aim of the National Lottery is to promote the public good, so your application must show that your project meets this requirement.  Public good can be achieved by, for example, performances, exhibitions, workshops, seminars or masterclasses undertaken by you, and/or presentations and publications of your work.

What criteria do you use to assess applications?
What criteria do you use to assess applications?
We assess your application against the following criteria:

  • your record of artistic achievement
  • the artistic quality of your ideas
  • the potential of your project to develop your creative practice
  • the likely benefit of your project to the people of Scotland.
